Transformation Station: Increasing Happiness and Self-Connectivity

Making a personal connection with yourself is about more than knowing who you are and what you want. It is about being able to recognize signs from your body that help you to live a healthier life. Connecting with yourself allows you to find interest in being with you to do things that are of interest to you. It means that you are never alone because you enjoy your own company. Can you imagine only being with you, not to do work or catch-up on anything; just being with you?

How often have you heard the words, “self-care”? It seems to be a trend that many are starting to follow, though in reality, it is more of a lifestyle. A lifestyle that increases mental agility. By making self-care a normal part of each day you are able to regulate your moods to have a balanced level of serotonin in your body.

Serotonin is a chemical that is found in both the brain and intestines. You can remember this by thinking about how your mood influences your appetite. For example, have you noticed that when most people are feeling sad or depressed they typically want chocolate, ice cream or something sweet? Sugar cravings are a sign of having low serotonin.

Serotonin is an important mood chemical that the body naturally produces. You want to be sure not to have low levels because it can lead to depression and anxiety. At the same time, too much serotonin can produce similar mood fluctuations and lead to physical symptoms such as shakes, shivers, and sweating.

Here are three tips that will help you with increasing serotonin, to be happier while connecting with you in new ways.

  1. Make a list of attributes that you are grateful for having. Start with your body and be as detailed as possible. For example, “I am grateful to have blood flowing through my veins” or “I am grateful to have toenails”. Read your list daily and add to it often.
  2. Be sure to participate in 20 to 30 minutes of exercise each day. This can be fast-paced walking, yoga, jumping rope, sit-ups, pushups, or going on Youtube to follow a workout. Being active is an important part of maintaining a positive mood while spending time with you.
  3. Schedule daily time to sit with just you. This time can be during the middle of the day at lunch or in the evening after completing your day. You may also choose to have self time in the morning. Remember you determine the best time for you. The important part is to make the time to be with you--void of the influence of others.
